Associate Professor Justin Bessell

Bariatric Surgeon

Dr Bessell graduated in Medicine from the University of Adelaide, including his doctorate in minimally invasive surgery, which culminated in a six month period of research into robotically-assisted laparoscopic surgery in Germany. Before returning home he spent a further two years in Brisbane and Leicester.

In 2003 Dr Bessell founded AMOS, enshrining the concept of a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of medical weight loss and diabetes. The collaborative approach of Bariatric Medical Practitioners and allied healthcare professionals within the matrix of obesity management uses scientifically proven, evidence-based therapies. Since its inception, this has become the standard of care for bariatric practices.

Dr Bessell also provides visiting surgical services to the Australian Defence Force. He is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve, and has deployed to war zones including East Timor (twice) and Solomon Islands, and to Banda Aceh in support of ADF military operations. He is formerly the Chairman of the Military Section of the College of Surgeons, and the former Chairman of the SA Regional Board in General Surgery.

He has over 90 published medical articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed international surgical journals and has presented innumerable papers and research topics at national and international surgical meetings and conferences.
