Since 2013 Makella has been working in various roles across the mental health care setting in both a public and private capacity. These include working in a well-known and trusted charity providing counselling and therapy services to clients with a sensory disability (vision and or hearing impaired) and children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Makella has many years of experience working with adults, children and families to assist them with a range of presenting difficulties, including the management of anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, stress management and behaviour management.
Through many years of clinical practice Makella has developed a strong interest in health promotion, body image, weight issues and maladaptive eating behaviours. She has a strong interest in assisting people to implement new behaviours and thinking patterns to assist them to lose weight and to maintain the loss over time.
Makella's therapy toolbox includes cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), mindfulness and relaxation strategies, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and elements of positive health psychology. Makella believes in a person centred and gentle approach to therapy and encourage clients to make positive and worthwhile lifestyle changes through education, encouragement and empowerment.
