Step 5: Visit a psychologist
Chris Thompson and Makella Holden specialise in the area of weight, eating and body image. In particular, they focus on motivating people to implement new behaviours and thinking, maximising the likelihood of sustained weight loss.
Chris and Makella are not so much interested in 'what' people eat, but rather the 'whens', 'wheres' and 'whys'! They aim to provide you with a framework that will maximise the benefits of bariatric surgery and lead to a happier, more confident you.
Prior to surgery, your session is designed to be practical in focus, often discussing issues such as non-hungry eating; comfort or emotional eating; impact of work/life on eating habits; your family and food; and, certainly helping you to get started on some small changes pre-surgery. Most people will have ‘done all the diets’, so it’s important to help you to move away from the dieting approach.
You will book a follow up appointment, usually one month after surgery.
Makella is able to see patients in person at Calvary Adelaide Hospital. Chris lives in Canberra, so sessions are held over the phone or via Skype or FaceTime. Please advise staff when making the appointment.
